# Small home office layout: desk, chair and storage fit

Plan the chair in its working and pulled-back positions, not only tucked under the desk. Keep the route to the door separate where possible, and check windows, outlets and storage before choosing the desk position.

## Measure a working footprint

Write down the desk width and depth, the chair footprint, and the space you use when sitting down or standing up. Add the full drawer extension to the storage measurements. A catalogue image with the chair pushed in is not an operating layout.

This example uses a 2400 × 3000 mm clear room, a 1200 × 600 mm desk and a 400 mm-deep cabinet. The chair-use zone is an assumed 900 mm for comparing layouts; try your own chair rather than treating that number as an ergonomic standard.

## Check the depth before adding another use

The 500 mm remainder is not a separate generous walkway. It shows why adding a sofa or letting traffic pass behind the chair needs another arrangement. Moving storage beside the desk may recover the opposite side, provided its doors still open.

## Choose a desk position by the constraint it solves

## Run a short real-room test

A plan helps decide where the workstation fits. Desk height, monitor position, lighting and the suitability of the chair still need their own checks. Do not infer them from a top-down outline.

1. Draw the shell, door swing and window positions in FloorDraft.
2. Place a desk using the actual outer dimensions.
3. Place the chair where you sit, then move it to the pulled-back position.
4. Check the route and storage access in both states.
5. Use tape to mark the desk in the room and sit there with your equipment.

## Questions

### Can the office share a bedroom?

Yes if both uses work with the actual furniture. Test the chair while the bed and wardrobe are in use, and keep a clear route to the door.

### Should the desk face the window?

Try the screen position at your usual working times. A floor plan cannot predict reflections, direct sun or your preferred view by itself.
