# Studio apartment layout: compare privacy, work and storage

Keep the bathroom, kitchen and entry fixed, reserve a connected walking route, then place the bed, seating and work area around it. Choose the layout by your daily priorities rather than by how many zones fit in a picture.

## Draw the fixed constraints before the zones

Mark doors, windows, heaters, built-in storage and kitchen appliances. Include the space needed to open an appliance or cupboard. Do not treat a movable screen as a wall that can support storage or services.

Record what the studio must do: one or two sleepers, a daily desk, dining for guests or storage for bulky items. Rank the top three needs. The same floor area can support very different arrangements depending on how often each activity happens.

## Compare three zoning approaches

## A footprint calculation is only the first check

Consider an illustrative 4500 × 6000 mm open main room: its rectangle is 27 m². A 1600 × 2100 mm bed frame occupies 3.36 m², a 2000 × 900 mm sofa 1.8 m² and a 1200 × 600 mm desk 0.72 m². Their combined footprint is 5.88 m².

The remaining 21.12 m² is not automatically spare usable area. It must also accommodate other furniture, fixed fittings, door movements, chair use and routes. If part of that 27 m² belongs to a bathroom or kitchen enclosure, subtract or draw those boundaries before using the calculation.

## Score the plans by daily use

| Is the bed visible from the entry? | Acceptable / screen needed |
| Can two activities happen at once? | For example, working and preparing food |

| What must move every day? | Number and size of movable pieces |

## Questions

### Should I divide a studio with a full-height bookcase?

Check stability, anchoring instructions, light and access first. A 2D footprint cannot establish whether a tall divider is safe or suitable.

### Is a sofa bed always more space-efficient?

Compare both its closed and open dimensions, plus the daily effort of converting it. A small closed footprint can conceal a much larger operating footprint.
